inventor of tao: Dr. Sherry Benton
TAO is a classic example of necessity being the mother of invention. Dr. Sherry Benton was the director of the counseling center at a large, public university, wrestling with providing timely mental health services for all of the students seeking help. The counseling center typically had a waiting list through most of fall and spring semesters. For students waiting lists are problematic, since some students get timely services, recover, and thrive in school, while those on a waitlist flounder and grades suffer. Ambitious students aiming to go to medical school, law school or other professional schools could have life long consequences resulting from a delay in treatment.
Dr. Benton recognized that with current financial restraints, she was never going to hire her way out of this problem. She began to look internationally for models that would expand capacity without significantly increasing the budget. She found a model used in several countries that combined on-line educational materials with brief telephone or videoconference sessions with a therapist. The idea for TAO was born.
